Abstract:

What is the truth about climate change? An answer to this polemic question requires at least a definition of climate change and a definition of truth, and the relationship between the two. While a definition of climate change is complex involving aspects of both Nature and Culture, the meaning of 'truth' in philosophical terms has been intensely debated throughout history to our present times. This thesis explores how truth emerges in the climate change debate and focuses on a specific pragmatist definition which offers its truth about climate change. Through the philosophy of Habermas and Ratzinger this pragmatist conception of truth is challenged and a renewed approach to finding the truth on climate change is proposed.
