Anotace:

"The island of East Pukapuka lies in the path of a tsunami that will kill everyone but Butter, a little girl more worried about the lives of the injured animals she cares for than her own. Butter is rescued by a Loggerhead sea turtle who carries her away on his back. As she and her exhausted savior begin to sink, the girl is plucked out of the sea by Jesus Dobby, the boozy owner of a salvage boat who is thrilled, at first, to have found a genuine "turtle-girl" hybrid. Downhill racer Dante Wheeler "dies" in a terrible skiing accident and revives in a twilight state, having lost all memories of his former life. When he heals enough to leave the rehab facility, Dante heads to Polynesia, where he has found a home in his dreams. There he encounters Ophelia, a beautiful blond policewoman who reluctantly agrees to transport him to East Pukapuka. Jope and Ratu, a pair of bumbling pirates, steal a vessel laden with cocaine. They are hotly pursued by the drug-runners' hit man Albino Paul, the descendant of cannibals, whose goal is to reclaim his heritage."--Publisher's website.

A sweeping story for such a compact book. It begins on an island in the South Pacific with an old man hoping to rescue a book he's been named after. Not to keep it dry from the soon-to-arrive tsunami, but to smuggle it into the next life so he might be able to read it for the first time.

Touching story

od BronxBookGirl (Publikoval uživatel WorldCat 2013-01-16) Skvělé Trvalý odkaz

Our December book club choice was Cole Alpaugh's The Turtle-Girl from East Pukapuka, a very strange, but touching story about a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean that strikes a remote island, and the mayhem that follows. Added to the mix is a brain damaged downhill skier, comical pirates who have stumbled...

Playful and clever, with a very dark side.

od MonographiCat (Publikoval uživatel WorldCat 2012-11-01) Skvělé Trvalý odkaz

There are two worlds in Cole Alpaugh's The Turtle-Girl from East Pukapuka . One is an isolated island in the South Pacific, where lives a cargo cult of sorts that names its offspring after authors of damaged books left during wartime. Second, is the afterlife called Happa...

Funny and tragic

Funny and tragic. I think this is a beautifully written story. I read this the same week as Mr. Grossman's The Magicians. What a wonderful few days!

Our August book of the month

od JoyceAtWork (Publikoval uživatel WorldCat 2012-09-19) Výborné Trvalý odkaz

A little bit tragic and a little bit hilarious, this is a unique tale of a girl clinging to a sea turtle she'd been caring for after a tsunami over runs her island, and a badly injured ski racer who comes to believe the girl's home is also his. The banter between hooligan pirates is quite funny, while...
