This book is an autobiography of Mona Ruiz, a Chicana woman who overcame a difficult childhood growing up in a Santa Ana neighborhood in the 80’s, filled with street gangs and violence. Mona recalls her experiences with gang lifestyle and the pain she endured from it. Her account covers physical abuse, racism, sexism and the constant struggle to find her own identity.

Mona had a small handful of supporters who encouraged her to follow her dreams: that was to become a police officer. With a lot of hard work and determination, Mona sheds her past gang affiliation once and for all and becomes a respected female police officer serving the Orange County community.

This book reveals the reality that kids still face today, illustrating the temptation to be part of a gang and adopt the gang life style. Mona’s true life account reveals a happy ending for someone facing extreme odds – giving hope to today’s youth that face peer pressure.
