Abstract:
Chicago born dancer Doris Humphrey danced with the famous Denishawn Company before she and fellow dancer Charles Weidman left in 1928 to set up their own studio and company in New York. Humphrey wanted to experiment with natural movement and to create dance that was indigenous to being American, a drive that remained at the heart of her choreographic explorations throughout her life. The two pieces presented here, With my red fires (1936) and New dance (1935), are parts of a trilogy on the general theme of human relationships.
