So much has been written about this book. What more can one say?
I like the book a great deal. It is one of my favorites. But it is challenging to read. The only unique thing that I can contribute to the discuss of this book is to say how I read it. I found my technique worked well to keep it interesting and my level of consciousness high.
I read this while I was in college. I would study in the library. After an hour or so of studying, I would get up, stretch, and wander the stacks a bit. Then I found that I enjoyed picking up this book and reading it standing for about 15 minutes. That was my reward for studying for an hour. So I would read it in 15 minute segments standing up. It was a break from my other work, and standing, I couldn't nod off. It is a long book and intentionally confusing, but my reading style let me get through it and thoroughly enjoy the poetry of the language, which demands high concentration.
I have afterward read some criticism. I especially enjoy Schutte's "Joyce and Shakespeare."
