Description: 178 pages ; 22 cm
Contents: Put aside those other Mexican folklore collections of treasure legends, short stories, weather lore and sentimental lyrics. Uncle Remus con chile is ¡picante! Here is a never-before-seen sampling of the verbal lore--literary folklore, if you will--that reflects the attitudes that Mexicans and Texas-Mexicans hold toward Anglo-Americans. Uncle Remus con chile is a rich repository, especially jokes and other narratives, collected during talla (joking) sessions, where beer drinking and verbal sparring were part of the ritual. Dr. Américo Paredes, the preeminent authority on the inter-cultural jest and Mexican American folklore, collected most of these humorous, often bawdy, tales along the Lower Rio Grande Valley, in central Mexico and in the U.S. Midwest during the 1960s. The versions he selected were those performed with the greatest artistry. The unique merit of Paredes's collection is that it can be enjoyed for its biting humor and ribaldry, as well as for its exemplary scholarship.--Cover
