Abstract:

"From the very outset, destiny was mingled with ministry. Pushing back the American frontier created rich Gospel opportunities. Between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, westward-bound evangelists, missionaries, revivalists, preachers, priests, nuns, and ministers zealously delivered Christianity of every denomination to urban and rural settlers from the Alleghenies to the Pacific. They preached God's word as they understood it, founded schools and benevolent societies, ministered to the varied spiritual and secular needs of whites, blacks, Native Americans, and Orientals. And they persevered. In a tough-skinned America often more concerned with survival than with worship, the efforts of these men and women produced buoying triumphs alongside dispiriting fiascos, rushes of self-confidence alongside depths of self-despair, exhilaration alongside frustration--experiences and emotions often entrusted with striking immediacy and poignancy to journals and letters. Through generous selections from the writings of twelve frontier evangelists and through over a hundred remarkable archival photographs of an America where religion was very much the framework of everyday life, Cathy Luchetti creates an unforgettable and fresh portrait of very human individuals--and an entire nation--'under God's spell'"--Book jacket.
