Fascinating story

This is a dark animal story, but very interesting.  Ranger, a hunting dog, is chained up outside his master's house deep in the bayou.  An unlikely visitor, a cat befriends Ranger, moves in under the house and has two kittens.  The story moves into the past and back to the present to...
