Abstract:

Students walk from the University grounds. At the meeting, the first speaker leads the crowd in singing America, then states, "We, the youth of America, are not going to take orders on when to march, when to get in line, and all the rest of the talk; we were fooled in 1917, but we declare today, in a great challenge nationally, 500,000 strong, that we will not be fooled again"; he discusses the strike for peace. A second speaker describes the ROTC as "one of the most vicious propaganda machines" at the University, with no place in a university curriculum; plebiscites at the UCLA and UC Berkeley campuses show that students are opposed to compulsory ROTC. He solicits donations to fund telegrams to legislators, then circulates petitions. The third speaker assails those who "carry their brains around in helmets even as butchers carry calves' brains around in buckets ... [and who] tell us that we cannot speak our own minds"; he derides the administration's assumption that all pacifists are communists ..., cont.

Summary continues: ... A speaker in military uniform says he wants to be in a position to defend himself. He asks the crowd why they choose to discuss peace at a time when the University does not want them to do it [crowd laughter]; the University has given the students a 1:00 meeting time in Royce Hall, but they choose to meet off campus at 11 am. The next speaker questions whether the University would ever allow students to come out and talk; moreover the 11:00 off-campus meeting is as an expression of solidarity with students nationwide who are meeting simultaneously. He urges students who see a particular poster to expose its fallacious lies; Joseph P. Lash is not and never has been a Socialist and has probably never conversed with Stalin; the students are sincere. A woman student discusses the strike and the importance of having in place a non-political student organization which will call a strike if and when war is declared.
