Abstract:

The 20th-century French philosopher, political activist, and Christian mystic Simone Weil wrote that "human life is a composition on several planes." Accordingly, this biography from avant-garde filmmaker Cathy Lee Crane is not simply an account of Weil's life, but a multilayered representation of her ideas as well. The black-and-white dramatization uses reenactments and experimental effects along with excerpts from Weil's Marseille notebooks to portray the time she spent in France's unoccupied zone during World War II. "The unoccupied zone" also refers to the psychic space through which Weil passed while exiled in her own country, an existential labyrinth imagined by Crane in this film. (Portions with English subtitles, 44 minutes) A streaming videorecording.
