Abstract:

Discusses the four major systems that control urination, urinary problems that relate to developmental changes, major items to be included when assessing a patient and common problems of urinary elimination, and the differences between straight and Foley catheters. -- Discusses nursing diagnoses and how defining characteristics for diagnoses are reflected in assessments and observations; also describes two types of nursing interventions and the behavioral objectives by which these interventions are evaluated. -- Presents independent interventions: positioning, relaxation, sensory stimulation, and physical pressure -- designed to help patients with distended bladders, indicating how the interventions work best in combination, and also illustrates the procedure for intermittent catherization of a female with a straight catheter, emphasizing the need for maintaining strict sterile technique. -- Discusses indications for and risks of a Foley catheter and illustrates catheterization of a male, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strict sterile technique; discusses causes of incontinence and factors to consider when assessing it, presenting interventions such as Kegel exercises and condom catheters to reverse or control incontinence.
