Artist. Humanitarian. National threat. In 1971, after the breakup of the Beatles, John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved to New York, where they became increasingly visible figures on the antiwar left. Lennon and Ono's involvement in a benefit concert for an imprisoned activist in Ann Arbor, Mich. made national news, and drew Lennon and Ono into the orbit of prominent anti-war activists, and of presidential candidate George McGovern. Nixon responded by putting the pair under constant surveillance, aided by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI. Strom Thurmond suggesting that Lennon's career as an antiwar celebrity spokesman could be derailed by revoking his temporary visa and getting him deported to England. This documentary looks at that right-wing attempt to have John Lennon deported as an "undesirable alien," and his long battle with immigration authorities.
