Abstract:

This report summarizes the results, findings, and recommendations from a series of three value engineering meetings relating to the repair and maintenance of guardrail and impact attenuators. These meetings were conducted cooperatively by the Departments of Transportation of Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia under the leadership of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). If implemented, the recommendations detailed in the report can be expected to: (1) reduce the unit cost of attenuator maintenance, (2) reduce the cost of guardrail maintenance, (3) reduce the number of impacts and the resultant costs of repair and replacement, and (4) speed the repair/ replacement process; thus, reducing labor costs per incident.
