Abstract:

"Variety: Photographs by Nan Goldin compiles the still photographs Nan Goldin created for director Bette Gordon's now infamous 1983 independent film, Variety, and offer a rare glimpse into this artist's symbiotic working process. This work contains the hallmarks of Goldin's early photographs, while also links to the Lower East Side bohemian milieu from which she often unflinchingly mined her subjects, and the Variety still photographs display the influence of filmmaking on Goldin's prolific output and especially the independent directors that helped establish the nascent downtown film scene in the early 1980s. Hovering unsettlingly between fiction and reality, "documentary style" and art photography, Variety: Photographs by Nan Goldin reveals a curious and previously unexamined aspect of Goldin's iconic career." "Variety: Photographs by Nan Goldin provides a window into the collision of music, club life, and art production that colored the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and is an important addition to Nan Goldin's oeuvre."--Jacket.
