Material Type: Original artwork
Document Type: Book
All Authors / Contributors: William P C Barton; Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co.,; H.C. Carey & I. Lea (Firm),
OCLC Number: 2167105
Notes: The second edition consists of v. 1 only, originally published: Philadelphia : M. Carey & Son, 1817. Stafleu notes, "Possibly simply a reissue with new t.p." It is in fact a closely imitative line-for-line reprint of the first edition up to page 148 (sheets 1-19, containing plates 1-12), corresponding to the first two numbers of the original part issue, the print run having increased beginning with no. 3. The rest of the volume contains sheets 20-35 of the first edition (nos. 3-4, containing plates 13-24).
In all sets that contain the second edition of v.1, it is paired with the first and only edition of v. 2 (1818), which was neither reprinted nor reissued; Shoemaker incorrectly describes the edition as 2 volumes.
Plates engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. Hand colored by various hands, as noted by the author in v. 2, page xv, remarking that "in despite of all exertions to prevent it, some colouring has passed through his hands, which, though not very faulty, was far from being as well executed as could be desired."
Collation: 4to: [1]⁴ 2-9⁴ 10² 11-35⁴ [$1 signed]; 138 leaves, pages [i-vii] viii [ix] x-xv [xvi (blank)] [17] 18-273 [274-276 (276 blank)] (frequent omission of pagination in pages 18-276 not noted) + plates ('Table 1'-'Table 24'). A figure '2' is set in the direction line of leaf 1v in all gatherings except 1, 8 (1v blank), 10, 18, 20, 25, 27, 28, 30 (1v blank), 31, 33, 34 (1v blank); in the first edition the figure is omitted also in gatherings 12, 16 and 19. Though it looks like a press figure, it more likely indicates the first page of the inner forme.
Includes indexes.
Identification of reprinted and original sheets based on comparison of 2 copies in the Brown University Library with digitized copies of the first edition from the National Library of Medicine and the Arnold Arboretum Library (Harvard University), and of the second edition from the Missouri Botanical Garden Library. In the Brown University copies the paper of the reprinted portion is noticeably browner.
Description: 273, [3] pages, 24 leaves of plates : color illustrations (engravings) ; 28 cm (4to)
Other Titles: Medical botany
Responsibility: By William P.C. Barton, M.D. Surgeon in the Navy of the United States, and of the Hospital for Marines in the Navy-Yard, Philadelphia; fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia; member of the American Philosophical Society; president of the Philadelphia Linnean Society; and professor of botany in the University of Pennsylvania. Volume I..
