Abstract:

Collection depicts medical, vocational and administrative services, as well as organized activities for African American veterans, mainly from the 1940s to early 1950s.

The collection consists mainly of posed and candid group portraits and candid views of wounded and disabled veterans, medical personnel, veterans in vocational training programs, veterans administration personnel, veterans' benefits applicants, veterans' families, officials and members of veterans' groups, some social gatherings and veterans' memorial gatherings, and veterans travelling abroad. Also depicted are exterior views of housing built for African American veterans in Queens, New York, Columbus, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia (ca. 1946); views of V-J Day celebrations in New York City (1945); an arial view of a World War I veterans encampment (1937); studio portraits of Army veterans; and candid views of Vietnam War veterans and the Vietnam Veterans' War Memorial in New York (1985). Of note is a series of posed group portraits of mainly African American patients, medical personnel, and student nurses in various facilities of the Veterans Administration Hospital, Bronx, New York (1946-1948).
