Abstract:

"This biography takes us from his [Marvin Gaye's] days as a crooner in Washington, D.C. to his ascension to one of Motown's brightest stars to 'What's Going On?' and finally his tragic death in Los Angeles. Personal photographs, interview and classical musical performances draw us closer to the legend that was Marvin Gaye."--1996 Peabody Awards entry form. A biography of singer Marvin Gaye (1939-1984) containing color & b&w film & still footage. Begins with his birth on April 2, 1939 in Washington, D.C., growing up in D.C. with an abusive father, quittting high school to join the Air Force.

joining Harvey Fuqua's group The Moonglows and moving to Detroit where he met Berry Gordy, in 1960. Continues with Gaye's transformation from a crooner to an R&B star for Motown Records. Contains footage of and references to Motown, Berry Gordy, Anna Gordy, Diana Ross & The Supremes and other Motown stars of the '60's. Segment devoted to the Civil Rights movement and the changes in Marvin's life during the mid to late '60's and his resulting 1971 protest album "What's Going On?"

Concludes with his meeting Jan Hunter whom he married in 1977, his problems with drugs and money, his move to Belgium and eventual return to America with the hit song "Sexual Healing" which earned him his first Grammy in 1983. In 1984, Gaye was shot to death by his father, Marvin Gaye Sr.

Contains performance footage and music video clips of the following Gaye songs: Hitch hike, Pride and joy, How sweet it is, Ain't that peculiar, Ain't no mountain high enough, I heard it through the grapevine, What's going on, Let's get it on, and Sexual healing.
