摘要:
Summary of a seminar presented by Steve Pollitt, reader in information science, University of Huddersfield, England, on view-based searching based on faceted classification and indexing. The performance of many information retrieval systems is limited by a number of factors. These include the nature of the interaction, dominated by the keyword search command line with the single result set system response, and the minimal use made of thesauri and classification schemes by end users. View-based searching presents a new paradigm that seeks to improve this performance by making more effective use of the graphic user interface through the presentation and interaction with views based on the hierarchical knowledge structures available with thesauri and classification schemes. Developments in database management systems to provide more powerful access to data can be paralleled with the latent retrieval power possible through faceted classification. Of particular interest to librarians, Dr. Pollitt pointed out that, view-based searching, as he has implemented it, is a useful extension of S.R. Ranganathan's facet analysis theory of classification from the early part of the century. At the time Ranganathan was working, it was not practical to implement his theory, but with a whole new world of electronic documents, automated content analysis tools, and electronic thesauri and subject headings, Ranganathan's work takes on a new light. As Dr. Pollitt said, the HIBROWSE interface he demonstrated bears a direct relationship to Ranganathan's colon-based classification scheme.
