Abstract:
The American journalist Varian Fry organised the 'Emergency Rescue Committee' in 1940, to help artists and intellectuals persecuted by Hitler to escape from Europe. In 1940/41 he went to Marseille as the Committee's representative and helped to organise the illegal escape of many of Germany's leading intellectuals and artists imprisoned in France, among them Sigfried Kracauer, Golo Mann, and Max Ernst. His headquarters was the Villa Bel Air in Marseille. The film tells the story of this forgotten man, who died in obscurity in 1967.
