Abstract:

The majority of the photographs in the Monk's House Photograph album MH-1 are portraits. The first seven pages of Monk's House photograph album I contain portraits of public figures many of whom were friends of the Woolf and Stephen families or were relatives of the families. The photographs include portraits of Thomas Hardy, Oliver Wendell Holmes and other famous men and women of the time period.

The rest of the album contains portraits of members of the Duckworth, Stephen and Woolf families as well as a few snapshots of family members. Subjects include Vanessa Bell, Julian Bell, Quentin Bell, Stella Duckworth, George Herbert Duckworth, Adrian Stephen, Laura Stephen, Sir Leslie Stephen, Leonard Woolf and others.

A few photographs of landscapes and of buildings are also included in the album. Many of these are photographs from Leonard Woolf's years (approximately 1908 through 1912) working for the Ceylon Civil Service, in Sri Lanka are located on pages 27 through 42. The album also includes pictures from Leonard Woolf's trip to Sweden in 1911 with his sister, Bella Sidney Woolf.
