Abstract:

The ministry challenge is to discern a renewed sense of purpose and direction for a church that has sought to survive for most of its existence. This vision seeks God's future for this congregation and empowers the church to live and minister with a clear understanding of who God calls them to be and what God calls them to do. The vision puzzle identifies the particular components or pieces that enable the church to image or clarify God's redemptive plan with regard to the Edisto Beach Baptist Church's specific context of ministry. The change theory utilized focuses primarily upon behavioral impediments and adaptive models emphasizing education and reframing to assess shared values and the formation of community. Interventions included (1) the selection of a diverse and inclusive task force to guide the process, (2) the design of the vision process, which informs participants so they might see the future, and (3) a strong emphasis upon individual and corporate spirituality throughout the process. These interventions enabled the congregation to affirm their purpose and identity and the vision or image of the church in the future provides a spiritual compass to make that future a reality.
