Coetzee, who also wrote "Disgrace", "Life & Times of Michael K", and "Diary of a Bad Year", along with winning Nobel Prize. The libretto is by playwright Christopher Hampton, who wrote "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Atonement." Magistrate of a frontier town comes becomes part of a drama of a military force waging a war against barbarians who are considered a threat to the future of the empire. The military uses torture to wag its war and when the magistrate defends a girl who has been tortured, he becomes a victim, too.
