Abstract:

Documentary on Philadelphia's Walnut Street Theatre, the oldest continuously operating theater in the United States. Includes historic photos, posters, and footage of the building's renovation in 1969. Helen Hayes reminisces about various productions she appeared in at the theater, Henry Fonda speaks of his experiences there in Mister Roberts, and Julie Harris describes opening night of The member of the wedding at the Walnut in 1949.

After the documentary, there is an additional fifteen minutes of silent movie footage filmed at the Walnut Street Theatre during the late 1930s. Material includes footage of George M. Cohan in I'd rather be right (1937), Ed Wynn in Hooray for what! (1937), and Stars in your eyes (1939), featuring Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante, Richard Carlson, and Tamara Toumanova. The Cohan footage is in black & white, the rest of the material is in color.
