Abstract:

Correspondence, notes, and related materials concerning Walter Lee Brown's collection of editions of Aurelius's Meditations. Correspondence, 1896-1898, consists of four ALS from Brown to Paul Barron Watson and nine letters, ALS and TLS, to Brown from Watson, Hastings Crossley, Richard Garnett, Thomas M. Johnson, and Frederick Whitton. Notes include a volume titled "Memoranda Concerning Various Editions of the Meditations of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus," 1896-ca. 1901, holograph; and sheets of notes, most holograph, with some clippings and other printed material, 1896-1898 and undated.

Related materials are "Notes pour M. Aurèle," in French, [18--?], ca. 75 p., written in manuscript in an unidentified hand, discussing passages from the Meditations; and a volume titled "M. Aurelius Antoninus: Golden Book & Dial of Princes," ca. 1896-ca. 1902, containing holograph notes about editions of The Golden Boke of Marcus Aurelius, translated by John Bourchier, Lord Berners, and The Diall of Princes, translated by Sir Thomas North, both translations of Libro llamado Relox de principes, by Antonio de Guevara. Also present are a genealogical table showing descendants of Benjamin Sullard, holograph, n.d., and a document issued by the adjutant general of New Jersey, certifying Sullard's military service in the American Revolution, 1885 Oct 7.
