Abstract:

Correspondence, speeches, appointment books, genealogical material, and other papers from Harding's early years as editor of the Marion Daily Star and his service as Ohio state legislator, U.S. senator from Ohio, and president of the United States. Subjects include his presidential nomination and campaign, his 1923 trip through Alaska and the West (U.S.), and Harding's death and the disposition of his estate. Includes papers of his wife, Florence Kling Harding, relating to Harding's presidency; papers of Harding's advisors and members of his presidential administration including George B. Christian, Sr.; George B. Christian, Jr.; Cyril Clemens; H.M. Daugherty; Hoke Donithen; Charles E. Hard; Ray B. Harris; Malcolm Jennings; Carl W. Sawyer; Charles E. Sawyer; and F.E. Scobey; records of the Harding Memorial Association relating to the construction of Harding Memorial; and papers of Kathleen F. Lawler including her unpublished biography of the Hardings and material concerning Albert B. Fall and the Teapot Dome Scandal.

Papers of Cyril Clemens consist of correspondence and personal reminiscences gathered by Clemens for use in a proposed biography of Warren G. Harding.

Papers of H.M. Daugherty include correspondence during Daugherty's service as U.S. attorney general in the Warren G. Harding presidential administration, material relating to Harding's presidential campaign, papers (1922-1934) of E.S. Rochester concerning the U.S. Department of Justice, and affidavits of witnesses before the Burton K. Wheeler-Smith Wildman Brookhart Committee during its investigation of Daugherty.

Papers of Hoke Donithen pertain to his friendship with Warren G. Harding, Ohio and national Republican Party politics, the presidential campaign of 1920, and the Harding Memorial Association. Correspondents include George B. Christian, Jr., Daniel R. Crissinger, H.M. Daugherty, and Warren G. Harding.

Papers of Charles E. Hard, assistant secretary to Warren G. Harding, consist of correspondence, personal reminiscences, and other papers relating to the Ohio Republican Party Ohio state politics, the 1920 presidential campaign, and the Harding presidential administration. Correspondents include George B. Christian, Jr., H.M. Daugherty, Charles Dick, Simeon D. Fess, Marcus Hays, Kathleen F. Lawler, Albert Clifton Thompson, and Frank B. Willis.

Papers of Ray Baker Harris consist chiefly of his unpublished biography of Harding and related correspondence, interviews, and documents.

Papers of Malcom Jennings, journalist and advisor to Warren G. Harding, consists chiefly of correspondence with Harding and Florence Kling Harding relating to Harding's career, Ohio state politics, and national affairs.

Charles E. Sawyer and Carl W. Sawyer papers consist chiefly of their correspondence with Warren G. Harding and Florence Kling Harding, official correspondence of Charles E. Sawyer suring his service as U.S. surgeon general, and correspondence of his wife, May Elizabeth Barron Sawyer, with Florence Kling Harding. Includes correspondence pertaining to local politic affairs in Marion, Ohio.

Papers of F.E. Scobey, director of the United States Mint during the Warren G. Harding presidential administration, include correspondence with Daniel R. Crissinger, H.M. Daugherty, Charles Gates Dawes, Florence Kling Harding, Malcolm Jennings, Harry F. MacGregor, and E. Mont Reily.
