Abstract:

The collection consists of papers of the Washington family of Macon, Georgia from 1840-1893. The papers consist of correspondence to James Henry Russell Washington and his son Hugh V. Washington. The majority of the letters to and from Macon Mayor James H.R. Washington (1840-1859) regard his inviting dignitaries to attend the Southern Central Agricultural Association fair in Macon. The majority of Hugh V. Washington's correspondence (1883-1893) concerns various legal matters relating to his practice of law, his involvement in the Chi Phi fraternity, with some personal correspondence. Correspondents include Henry W. Grady, Clark Howell, and Billups Phinizy.
