Abstract:

"Two million tourists come every year to Washington, D.C. They see the Capitol, the Washington Monument, Arlington, and Mount Vernon. Perhaps they get a glimpse of the Government Printing Office putting out dollar bills and stamps. But of the vast and super-complicated net of nation-wide activities of this they see nothing. This book intends to show in picture and in word the function of the national capital as it reaches into every farm, town, home, and life. It is the story of Democracy in Action. This is not the book's only function. It tells, also, the tale of the Washington the Washingtonian knows; the tale of the city whose business is good government. And for good measure, it includes, as well, the sights you are suppose to see"--Jacket flap.
