Abstract:

This special topic poll sought respondents' views on the the presidency and the 1996 presidential and congressional elections. Those queried were asked to assess their knowledge of the recent presidential and congressional elections and to comment on their decision-making process, the influence of the political conventions and debates, and the influence of media coverage on the campaign. Respondents were quizzed on the party platforms, specifically on the following issues: abortion, social program spending, defense, Medicare spending, assault weapons, school vouchers, constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and allow voluntary prayer in public schools, and family leave guidelines. Additional topics covered the power of negative news coverage, the state of the American economy, sources of campaign information, and the uses of political contributions. Demographic variables include age, race, sex, education, political party, political orientation, labor union membership, marital status, religion, and family income ...
