摘要:
This collection consists mainly of lists of watch paper collectors, notes referring to them, and some correspondence, 1948-1958. The watch papers were originally used as a packing or cushion between the inner and outer case of the watch. Most were actually made of fabric with a variety of engraved (or needlepoint) designs.
The lists in this collection are primarily supplements to the booklet written by Dorothea Elizabeth Spear, titled American Watch Papers... (American Antiquarian Society, 1952). There are also photographs of watch papers, one restrike from the original copper plate, printed articles on watch paper collections, lists of books and pamphlets which contain references to such collections, and lists of libraries and institutions which hold collections, e.g., the Smithsonian and Essex Institute. The librarians of those institutions wrote several letters to Mrs. Spear concerning their collections. There are also lists of foreign watch papers and private collections, such as the Samuel E. Bemis and James Arthur collections.
