Abstract:

Collection of engraved watch papers, created for clock and watch makers doing business in various towns of Essex, England, probably during the first half of the 19th century.

Watch papers are small, printed or engraved, round paper inserts, placed in pocket watches to keep the case securely closed, and thus protect the inner workings from dust. They are printed on one side with the name and address of the watchmaker, while a manufacturing or repair date was often hand-written on the verso. Elaborate papers, such as these, were engraved and intricately illustrated, often with allegorical figures such as Father Time, or drawings of timepieces. These papers advertise fourteen watch- and clockmakers from Essex, many of which are listed in Pigot & Co.'s directory of Essex of 1823/24; Bennet's name appears in the Essex census of 1841. They are: William Allatson of Witham; Collis & Son, and [James?] Bennet of Romford; Rogers & Seacar of Saffron Walden; William Bull, John Barber, William Bushnan, and Thomas Watkins, all of Stratford; Nathaniel Hedge (1735-1821) & Joseph Banister (1778-1875) of Colchester, in partnership as Hedge & Banister from 1807-1814; Francis Furner of Rochford; Thomas Spencer of Chelmsford; Isaac Lake of Braintree; S. Shortman of Brentwood; and Smith of Church Street, Coggeshall.
