Abstract:

"We Shall Overcome" is a song that touches people's hearts, raises their hopes for the future, and gives them courage to persevere in times of adversity and danger. In moving, informative text, Stuart Stotts traces the complex roots of this world-famous piece of music. He explains how it became an anthem for civil rights activists, labor organizers, and Vietnam war protesters, shedding light on three political and cultural movements that changed the nation. He also describes how the song spread throughout the world. It is illustrated with a variety of archival photographs as well as original balck-and-white art and includes a foreward by Pete Seeger, source notes, a bibliography, an index, and musical notation.
