The Wee Free Men is the first in a series of books about Tiffany Aching, a Discworld shepherdess and nascent witch. Nine year old Tiffany--who has read the dictionary from cover to cover, tends to question authority, and always carries a piece of string--has responsibility, if not greatness, thrust upon her when a doorway opens between her universe and a neighboring one, ruled by a greedy and selfish queen. She is aided--and occasionally hindered--in her quest by the Nac Mac Feegle, a race of six inch tall footpads with a love of strong drink. Though aimed at a juvenile audience, the book has all of the sly wit, clever wordplay and subtle philosophy of Pratchett's other Discworld novels.
