Abstract:

Letters, postcards, telegrams.

Source material revealing more of the composer's domestic concerns than the workings of his creative mind, Lenya's earthy zest for life, and a relationship characterized by mutual dependence, problems, and the reliance by each on a very vital sense of humor. The frequent trips taken by both of them, but especially Weill, and the apparent ease with which they communicated with each other occasioned a rich, though somewhat sporadic, body of correspondence. Names that appear frequently in the correspondence include: Maurice Abravanel, Mab (Mrs. Maxwell) Anderson, Maxwell Anderson, Ernst Josef Aufricht, Sam Behrman, Bertolt Brecht, Eric Charell, Cheryl Crawford, Ira Gershwin, Lee (Mrs. Ira) Gershwin, Max Gordon, Moss Hart, Helen Hayes, Fritz Lang, Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, Mary Martin, Edwin Justus Mayer, Florence Meyer Homolka, Caspar Neher, Otto von Pasetti, Max Reinhardt, Alma "Jo" Révy, Richard Révy, Bella and Sam Spewack, Walter Wanger, Hans Weill, and Rita Weill.
