Abstract:

This is the second chapter in the film biography of one of Germany's greatest writers, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Using letters, memoirs, rare manuscripts, paintings, photographs, readings from his works and excerpts of stage plays, this presents a portrait of Goethe during a period of increasing fame, achievement, and happiness, crowned by his trip to Rome. Goethe claimed that "In Rome I found myself, and in harmony with myself I have become happy and sensible." The vibrancy of his far-ranging mind is exhibited in the works discussed, which include Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, Iphigenie auf Tauris, and Torquato Tasso.
