schema:description "Searle (human geography, U. of Durham, UK) provides an analysis of well-being by arguing that money is not the key to happiness. She critiques the economic idea that the richer societies are, the more people can consume, which will make them happier; examines the social idea that unequal societies are unhappy; and proposes the welfare idea that well-being is part of a search for contentment which is based on many things, not just wealth. She asks what factors really make up well-being, focusing on the adult population (25 and over) of Great Britain between 1991 and 1999, and responds to the question of why economic development does not mean psychological fulfillment. The historical development of well-being and the sociology behind the theories is also explained, as are alternative measures that focus on subjective factors such as health, demographics, social aspects, and regional elements. The study is based on data from the British Household Panel Survey, which was originally collected by the Economic and Social Research Council Research Centre on Micro-Social Change at the U. of Essex. The study was undertaken for the author’s PhD. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
