Als sie auch noch ihren Job verliert, droht der endgültige soziale Abstieg. LaVaughn kann sie überreden, wieder zur Schule zu gehen und unterstützt sie, bis Jolly wieder Boden unter den Füßen hat. Spannung entsteht durch die Beziehung der beiden völlig gegensätzlichen Mädchen zueinander: hier LaVaughn, ehrgeizig und zielstrebig; dort Jolly mit ihrem ganz und gar ungeordneten Leben, allein, überfordert, der Verzweiflung nahe. Jolly lernt von LaVaughn, ihr Leben in die Hand zu nehmen. Aber auch LaVaughn lernt etwas: Respekt vor Jolly Überlebenswillen und ihrem Humor, und die Erfahrung, daß Solidarität mit andern das eigene Leben bereichern kann.
