White Teeth is a very deep, thought provoking, and hilarious novel about everyday people struggling to find their place in the world while looking for true happiness. The setting of the novel mainly takes place in England between the years 1975 through the year 2000 but also flashbacks to early 1900 Jamaica, India, and various locations during World War II. The novel centers on the Iqbal and Jones families whose patriarchs meet through a mishap while serving for England during World War II. Later in the novel the readers are introduced to the Chalfen family who also play a pivotal role. The characters Smith develops are multidimensional and realistic enabling the reader to feel a wide spectrum of emotions as we see these multicultural families face issues around racism, sex, sexism, religion, and the various stages of human development. This is an excellent read and highly recommended.
