Abstract:

A warm, interesting and often humorous journey into the bewildering world of learning a new language as four sets of people with virtually no means of communicating with one another attempt to bridge the language barrier. Confronting prejudice on every side, it follows four first-generation immigrants each with their own unique reason for wanting to learn. For some it means more opportunities for work and the chance of a fresh future for them and their families, while for others it's a possible end to loneliness. The four immigrants, who entered Britain more than a year ago, come originally from Poland, Colombia, China and the Democratic Republic of Congo. None of the four has managed to learn English so far. The immigrants get a crash course for learning English, while the host families experience a first-hand insight into immigration.
