Abstract:

"Among the colleagues saluting director William A. Wellman (1896-1975) in this engrossing 1995 study is Clint Eastwood, who appeared in Wellman's penultimate 1958 movie Lafayette Escadrille. 'He was wild. He was from a wild era of filmmaking, ' Eastwood recalls, referring to the freewheeling Hollywood of the 1920s and '30s. The documentary chronicles how the Massachusetts-born Wellman's daring WWI flying record helped land him his breakthrough assignment in Hollywood: directing Wings, an Academy Award winner for Best Pictures in 1927. Included are clips from such Wellman screen classics as The public enemy (1931), Wild boys of the road (1933), A star is born (1937), The Ox-Bow incident (1943), Battleground (1949) and The high and the mighty (1954)"--TV guide, August 13, 1996. Includes remembrances by: Mike Connors, Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Darryl Hickman, Arthur Hiller, Tab Hunter, Howard W. Koch, Tom Laughlin, Burgess Meredith, Robert Mitchum, Harry Morgan, Gregory Peck, Sidney Poitier, Nancy Reagan, Robert Redford, Buddy Rogers, Martin Scorsese, Tony Scott, Robert Stack, Michael Wayne, Dorothy Wellman, James Whitmore, Richard Widmark, Robert Wise, Jane Wyman.
