The protagonist is Jack Irigaray, a biologist in Nevada who accompanies a game warden on a hunt for a poacher. In a shootout the warden is killed and Irigaray is wounded. At the trial the poacher receives a relatively light sentence and escapes. The biologist goes after him to settle scores.
