Abstract:

Correspondence, financial records, and miscellaneous material collected by William B. Shrimplin concerning the Wyandot Indians. Includes a copy of a letter (1815) of Duncan McArthur stating the Indians' intent to continue the war and the need to rebuild Fort Wayne. A letter (1815) of James Hughes reminds Ohio Governor Thomas Worthington of a promise to visit Indian chief Capt. Lewis. In his letter (1820) to Ethan A. Brown, John Johnston conveys a speech by War Pole, expressing the Wyandot's and Seneca's negative reaction to a proposed road through their land. Robert Lucas' unsuccessful attempt in 1834 to negotiate a treaty with the Wyandots is recorded in letters from Lewis Cass and the U.S. War Department, a diary of events during the negotiation, Lucas's speech explaining the treaty, and notes from a council meeting between Lucas and Jacques, the principal chief. Account sheets and vouchers document the treaty expenses of Lucas and of agents and negotiators, John McElvain, John Hunt, Robert Lewis, William Walker and John A. Bryan.
