Abstract:

Records include administrative correspondence and subject files. Many records predate and postdate William Jacob Robbins' tenure as Director, and they include records of other NYBG offices and departments. In part this reflects the use of Robbins' files by Henry de la Montagne, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the Board of Managers, Business Manager, and, in retirement, volunteer administrator-at-large and administrative archivist.

Administrative correspondence, ca. 1937-1957, comprises about one-third of these records by bulk. Correspondents include Liberty Hyde Bailey, Sherman Baldwin, Edwin De Turck Bechtel, Marston Taylor Bogart, William John Bonisteel, Marian Cruger Coffin, Robert Moses, and others. Institutional correspondents include City of New York Parks Dept., City of New York Board of Estimate and Controller. Subjects include fundraising and grants, 1912-1914 and 1931-1963; Fiftieth Anniversary; budgets, 1950-1960; construction programs, 1937-1960; Lorillard Snuff Mill reconstruction; employee files, ca. 1924-1964; salaries, budgets, pension plan, and labor relations, 1931-1957, legal agreements and opinions, 1931-1957; publication plans and correspondence, ca. 1935-1957; and public relations, ca. 1945-1966.
