Shipmaster and partner in the Boston merchant trading firm of Bryant and Sturgis. Papers contain a log and narrative (attributed to ship's clerk Samuel Curson) of a voyage to the northwest coast and China on the ship Eliza, commanded by James Rowan, 1798-99. Also, logs of the ship Pearl, under John Ebbets (1804-07), and John Suter (1807-08). Collection includes manuscripts of three lectures Sturgis gave in the 1840s on the history of the early fur trade along the northwest coast, in Hawaii, and at Canton, which discuss in particular the traders' relations with the northwest Native Americans.
