Abstract:

Papers consist of personal correspondence of the Terry and related Jefferies families, in addition to miscellaneous items of the Ellett and Baillio families. Letters (1821-1859) to Martha Ker Terry from her husband, her mother, Mary Ker, and her brother, John Ker of Natchez, and letters to Sarah Terry Jefferies discuss personal and family matters. Notable correspondent Henry Hughes, an attorney of Port Gibson, Mississippi, comments on settlement of Martha Miller Jefferies' estate, the Democratic Convention at Charleston, and issues relative to his participation in the Civil War. Civil War letters written by members of the Jefferies family comment on troop movements, battles (e.g., Manassas, Yorktown, and Fort Pickens), and concern for slaves and property. Included among the Civil War letters are two apparently written by Sollomon, a family slave. One was written at Port Hudson (1862), is addressed to "mistress," and he discusses the goods his master needs and offers greetings to other family members. The other is not addressed.

Also included are photographic copies of Pierre Baillio's military discharge (1766) and a land grant (1795) to Baillio signed by Carondelet, as well as copies of photographs of Greenwood Plantation, H.E. Ellett's home in Port Gibson, and Peter Baillio's home in Alexandria, Louisiana.
