Approx. 500 letters (some photocopies), also clippings, poems and other misc. papers of related Clark and Winston families of Virginia and Indiana. Letters between family members discuss family and friends, the small schools that members of the families kept in the mid-west, also comments on politics, Civil War, slavery, religion, education. Within the approx. 130 Clark family letters are Daniel Clark letters discussing teaching and his schools; Hezekiah Clark letters discuss teaching, his schools, farming; John Clark letters include news of Quaker meetings and ministers, business, farming; N. Maria Clark letters include courtship correspondence with deceased sister's husband, Bowling H. Winston; Martha Ann Clark letters discuss studies and teaching; Mary H. Clark letters to nephews discuss their education, family, Civil War excitement.

Within the approx. 370 Winston family letters are Ambrose W. Winston letters discussing travel, Camp meetings, Civil War, farming, teaching; Anna Clark Winston letters tell of teaching and Quaker activities; Bowling H. Winston letters include family news, schooling (Mt. Pleasant Boarding School, Ohio; U. of Va.), politics, travel, teaching, slavery, farming, Quaker activities and meetings, military service (brothers join Confederate Army) and courtship of N. Maria Clark; Charles J. Winston and William Henry Harrison Winston letters include those while in Confederate Army (11th Va.); Elizabeth C. Winston's letters include thoughts on spiritual matters, death, health concerns, illness and deaths of her children, homesickness, farming; John C. Winston letters while at Haverford College; Lucy A. Winston's letters while at National Surgical Institute in Indianapolis; Pleasant Winston, Jr. letters discuss family, school life, mother's illness and death, farming. Thomas and Lindley M. Winston letters while at Haverford College.
