I enjoyed Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls. Yes, the main character / narrator Lia is awfully self centered and unwilling to cooperate with anyone who wants to genuinely help her. But she is disturbed and self-destructive and intensely interesting. I think this book is great for teens, and not just b/c it teaches about the dangers of eating disorders. What a great bridging book to teach about literary voice! The crossed out words demonstrate to readers that what we think and what we say aren't always the same thing. Sometimes we lie to ourselves or hide things from ourselves in the same way we lie to others and hide things from others. I like how Anderson puts that concept on the page through Lia's words and revisions to her thoughts (i.e. the crossed out words). Ultimately, I enjoyed this quick-read novel because I know that I would have LOVED it when I was a teen. I (fortunately) never struggled with an eating disorder, but this book about a teen trapped in that world would have enthralled me 15 years ago. (Similarly, back in "the day" I never struggled with drug abuse, but I read 'Go Ask Alice' about a thousand times.) I loved controversial teen drama when I was younger. It's a great way to catch teenagers' attention and get them interested in reading.

A fast paced easy to read novel that grabs you from the first page. Although the subject matter is grim, it is handled in a way that is not overly depressing and makes the reader sympathizes with all involved. Lia and Cassie are best friends with different eating disorders. Told through the eyes of Lia readers get a glimpse into why any seemingly healthy young lady would starve herself to near death.
