Abstract:

Life has always been difficult for Alice Luckett. A fragile, sensitive child, she's been exposed to extraordinary tensions at home since birth. This culminates in the suicide of her father, Len, and the disappearance of her mother. 9 year old Alice isn't the only one to take Len's death badly. Frank, Len's twin, is left with several decidedly unpleasant dilemmas, one of which is Alice herself. Too young to understand the adult frictions around her, Alice's only comfort is in visiting the neighbourly Nell Ainslie. In addition, Nell's son, the handsome Eric, comes to intrigue her, firstly for his kindness, and later for other reasons as well.
