Abstract:

Chicago born dancer Doris Humphrey danced with the famous Denishawn Company before she and fellow dancer Charles Weidman left in 1928 to set up their own studio and company in New York. Humphrey wanted to experiment with natural movement and to create dance that was indigenous to being American, a drive that remained at the heart of her choreographic explorations throughout her life. The two pieces presented here, With My Red Fires (1936) and New Dance (1935), are parts of a trilogy on the general theme of human relationships. They are performed here by a company especially assembled by the American Dance Festival in 1972 to honor Doris Humphrey. With My Red Fires is a dramatic large group work dealing with the power of love -- maternal, fraternal and romantic -- and its capacity for passionate and destructive excesses. It concludes with a vision of human brotherhood that prevails over prejudice, dissension, and violence. New Dance is a choreographically symphonic ballet that represents a world where each person has a clear and harmonious relationship to his fellow beings. To achieve this, the leaders gradually mold and unify the group in a series of stages or "themes". The triumphant and joyous ending depicts an ideal society that allows for individual expression within group unity.
