Resumen:
Europe's failure to secure its future is mirrored by an abandonment of its spiritual roots in the interests of relativist secularism. The authors call on Europeans and the West in general to accept that only a spiritual rather than political renewal will help us to make sense of changes in technology, economics and society for the good of all.

This book takes the form of two short "dialogues", firstly Ratzinger's speech and Pera's response to it, then a direct written corresponence between them.I found Pera's strong identification of America with "The West" a little one-sided, and his insistance that a war on terrorism is possible, without making the effort to define "war" (is it possible without explicit state backing on both sides?) frustrating, but many of his general points worthwhile. The (then) Cardinal's speech is more useful, in sensitively tracing the formation of Western identity in political, cultural and ultimately religious terms. The lasting impression is amazement at the level of agreement between the Cardinal and the self-proclaimed "secularist", Pera.
