Quest begins in Rondo

Leo Zifkak has a very unique music box; the box allows him access to a world called Rondo. Rondo and its citizens come to life when Leo winds the music box. When Leo notices blue smoke coming from the Blue Queen’s tower, Mimi realizes that she needs to go with Leo to find out what is happening in Rondo. Upon arriving, Leo and Mimi encounter Bertha, a very brave watch-pig, Freda, a very blunt duck and Conker. Bertha, Conker and Freda are responding to a request to help a wizard’s apprentice. In this sequel to Key to Rondo, Leo and Mimi must help their friends with a quest as well as try to outwit the Blue Queen. The story tries to combine humor, a quest, and fairy-tale allusions and introduce new-comers to Rondo’s landscape. This very heavy combination may be asking too much of a middle school reader who is not familiar with the first book. Fans of Rodda’s first book may enjoy being reacquainted with Leo, Mimi and Bertha.
